The Color of Friendship took place in Washington D.C in the 70s. An African American teen girl was actually eager to participate in the African exchange school-age child program. Piper realizes recent in the process, that the reason Mahree has never talked about inviting her back to southeast Africa, is because it is not racially accepted in her society.
